We have discussed the importance of social media and the impact that online reviews can have on your new store. But, don’t forget to use your social presence to generate excitement for your new store before your grand opening.
Once you’ve started using Twitter, it won’t take long before you come across what’s known as a hashtag. That’s when you see something in a tweet that has a # prefix. (The # is a hash symbol, hence the term hash tag or, more commonly now, hashtag.)
A hashtag is simply a way for people to search for tweets that have a common topic. For example, if you search on #GRAVITY (or #gravity or #GraVItY, because it’s not case-sensitive), you’ll get a list of tweets related to the movie “Gravity.” What you won’t get are tweets that say, “Who discovered gravity?” because “gravity” isn’t preceded by the hashtag.
Using a dedicated hashtag on Twitter can help potential customers easily track conversations about your new store opening and join the conversation.
1. Publish the hashtag on all promotional materials.
Use the hashtag liberally leading up to the event. Consider including your hashtag on your television commercial, if you have one, and all of your print materials. This even includes any “coming soon” signage at your store.
When people know which hashtag to use they are more likely to include it on their social media posts. When everyone uses the same tag you will be able to track and join the conversation.
2. Choose a hashtag that is less than eight characters.
A lengthy hashtag can be a burden to content. Also, make sure the hashtag is logical—it should relate to the theme or subject matter of your grand opening.
H&M is a good example of a short, relevant grand opening hashtag. #HMTSQ is easy to remember and relevant to their Times Square grand opening.
3. Encourage people to tweet at the grand opening using your hashtag.
In a way, hashtags allow you to create communities of people interested in the same topic by making it easier for them to find and share info related to that topic.
If done properly and consistently, a hashtag promotion can effectively employ other people as promoters of your work. Their followers will see the hashtag and may choose to follow you or the promotion as it unfolds.
